The year that was 2018 is slipping away. Whether the year was good, bad or status quo, the most important thing is to be prepared to step into the future from a place of strength and confidence – and this goes for your personal goals as well as your business goals. After all, if you have your house in order, everything else is a breeze, right?
Even though you’re probably sidetracked with parties, shopping, and all manner of holiday activities, that doesn’t mean it’s too late. Here are some great tips we’ve put together on how to finish the year strong:
1. Fix things—and relationships—that have been broken
That crack in your windshield, the broken handle on the bathroom door, the loose board on your front stoop – these are all little things you’ve probably been putting off (maybe all year!). If you want to put these small annoyances behind you once and for all, it’s a good idea to address them now so you never have to trip over it/get locked in or out/or compromise your auto safety in the new year.
And further to this sentiment, have you got any personal relationships that could use a reset? The holidays and the new year are a perfect time to repair old grievances. No matter who is right or wrong, make the first move. Extend the olive branch and put the matter behind you. You’ll both feel a lot lighter.
2. Have a feedback session with your boss
The end of the year is the perfect time to take a hard look at the year that was and make observations as to what went well and what went … not so well. Whether it’s been a year of wins or a year of frustration, connecting with your boss and closest colleagues with an eye toward the future will help pave the way for future success and satisfaction.
If you feel you deserve a raise or if you want to discuss the potential for a promotion or even a lateral move, take this time to lay the groundwork. Make your intentions known and you will have a much better chance of achieving those goals.
3. Do something good for you and for others
We all feel charitable at the end of the year; it’s just in the air. And if you count yourself as one of the fortunate ones who have a job, a roof over your head, and friends that love you, you are better off than the vast majority of people in the world. Give what you can, and even if you can’t afford to give, think about donating your time to a great cause.
Some ideas: visit a senior who has no family. Volunteer to serve food to the homeless at a local shelter. Donate clothes you no longer wear to an organization who can get them to people in need. Rescue a cat or a dog. There are so many things you can do!
