Create a Successful Start-Up with Heritage Office Suites

With all of the endless publications on what to do and not to do when starting a business, it’s hard to know where to begin. Do you borrow money? Partner with someone? Cash out your 401k? Lease an office space? There is no shortage of individuals with great ideas and proven success stories, but it can be difficult to determine what will work best for you and fulfill your business aspirations.

If you are new to entrepreneurship, then consider the following six tips from Peter Gasca — contributor and startup consultant for The Entrepreneur — for creating a successful start-up

  1. Co-founders

Many businesses are founded by more than one person out of necessity. If you are seeking co-founders for your business, keep in mind that anyone you find should have the same expectations as you about the future of your business. You should put as much effort into finding a co-founder as you would a spouse. You will be just as financially and emotionally tied to this person, so choose wisely.

  1. Technical talent

If you need good technical talent, be prepared to pay for it. With the increasing need for a strong digital presence, this is a wise area to invest in. Keep in mind that you often get what you pay for when it comes to technical expertise.

  1. Service providers

The most important services to pay for are those in which you have the least experience and understanding. Do your research to ensure you find a reputable service provider. A good accountant and knowledgeable attorney are crucial assets to any size company that is providing a service to others.

  1. Reviews and referrals

Reviews and referrals are very influential and important to attract new clients. An audience can help raise visibility for your product quickly and cost effectively. Promote referrals by offering incentives and follow-up immediately on reviews that are less than desirable.

  1. Industry awards and certifications

Most industries offer a wide variety of awards and certifications. Knowing which ones carry the most influence and impact requires careful and thoughtful research. While it is eye-catching to have awards and logos on your website and business cards, it can get quite expensive. Take the time to learn which ones offer the most bang for your buck.

  1. Investors

Maybe the most intimidating step for an inexperienced entrepreneur is raising money and finding the right investment partners.  Investment firms (venture capital and private equity) and individual (angel) investors should not require you to pay a fee to be considered for investment. If they do, stay far away. The best way to find good investors is to search for them yourself by attending networking events, asking other entrepreneurs, and taking an active role in local and regional business organizations.

The common theme among all of these tips is “do your homework.” Most importantly, network with other entrepreneurs. Make a point to be active and visible where they meet, such as coworking spots and networking events. Startup entrepreneurs love to help each other and they are about the most reliable and affordable resources you will find.
