Austin: The Little City that Grew Up

Those of us living in the Austin / Round Rock area know how things have changed recently, and changed fast. It seems that everywhere we look there is growth. That growth has been fueled to a certain degree by population boom.

The recent news that Austin is the 11th-largest U.S. city, according to Census numbers, shocked a lot of people. We’re growing fast, but that fast?

It seems like only yesterday we were ranked No. 13. Oh, wait, that was yesterday. But the number crunchers have now determined that over the past year we’ve grown a bit bigger than Indianapolis and Jacksonville, Fla.

The Census has probably more information than you want to know here. If you click that link, be sure to note the graph that points out that San Marcos and Cedar Park — both Austin suburbs — are at or near the top of the country’s fastest-growing cities list.

But a big question on many minds, which this Census data doesn’t really answer, is: Where are all these people coming from? A couple of years ago Forbes shed some light on that subject when it published this cool map, which actually tracks where people are moving from. One of our reporters liked it so much it hung in our newsroom for about two years — a pretty long lifespan for a piece of paper in a newsroom.

The Forbes maps are from 2010, but based on what I know they’re still pretty valid. The overall migration trends over the past couple of years have not changed dramatically.

Oh, and No. 11 is indeed a big deal. But remember that the list of biggest cities only accounts for population within city limits. In terms of metro areas, Austin is 33rd-largest. But we’ll climb that ladder quickly too, largely thanks to Williamson County, which by 2040 may have more people than Travis County.

We keep moving up the rankings on several metrics. It is clear that something very special is at play in Austin / Round Rock. We are so fortunate to be a part of it and to play a role; however small, in the development in local businesses by facilitating office space and other services for them.
