Apple Inc.’s fast-growing campus is undergoing a major expansion and the economic impact is already being felt by Austin and its neighboring suburbs. Three hundred new Austin-Apple jobs have been posted on Indeed.com and fortunately for the local economy, most of the new-hires have been locals. About 67 percent of the employees at Apple’s Austin campus had local addresses even before they were hired according to data supplied to the city by Apple late last year. When the hiring for the current expansion is all done, Apple is projected to be the fifth-largest employer in Central Texas and the new employees will more than double Apple’s current Austin workforce.
The expansion site, which is located in Northwest Austin near Parmer Lane and McNeil Road, is being doubled in size and is a $304 million investment for the company. Currently, Apple employs about 3,000 people in a series of nondescript office buildings so the expansion will allow many of the employees to work “in house”.
According to recent reports, the new structures will cover 200,000 square feet of office space and are part of the initial stage of construction, which is slated to cost $56 million. After phase one’s estimated completion date in 2015, Apple is set to move onto phase two, which is even larger than the first and is expected to create 800,000 square feet of new operating space. The Austin campus expansion is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021.
